Essay Tips: Class Notes
1. Use the Response to Literature Essay Sheet to make sure you include the important elements in an intelligible order.
2. Start paragraph 1 with a HOOK!!!!
3. End paragraph 1 with the THESIS.
4. You may sometimes find it necessary to begin paragraphs 2, 3, & 4 with a TRANSITIONAL PHRASE .
5. Include the page number after each QUOTE.
6. Each QUOTE must support the information you provide in the paragraph. Use a Quote Sandwich.
7. Use PRESENT TENSE when talking about literature.
8. Use a THESAURUS to vary your word choice. Never use "things".
9. Connect the HOOK to the SUMMARY in paragraph 1
10. Don't use PRONOUNS of I, You, We. Use "The reader".
