Directions for Various Partner / Independent Activities
for Enrique's Journey
1. KWL - Title a piece of paper "Immigration" and put your name on it. Divide it into three columns (the long way). Write K, W, and L at the top of each column. Under the K, write down everything you KNOW about immigration. Under the W, write down everything you WANT to know about immigration. Under the L, write down everything you have been learning about "immigration" during this unit that you didn't know before (from reading Enrique's Journey, listening to guest speakers, talking to people, doing this independent/partner activity, etc.). Supply at least 6 items under each letter! On the back of the paper, write a paragraph about what the word "immigration" makes you think about, feel, remember, connect to, wonder about, etc.
(Each of the individuals in the partnership will do this separately)
2. Poem - Get a copy of the poem "We Never Stopped Crossing Borders." As you read it, annotate it. Include at least 10 annotations using different types of comments (questions, evaluations, predictions, literary devices, opinions, vocabulary, inferences, interpretations, visualizations, etc.). This will be done individually. Then, on another sheet of paper, answer the following questions together about the poem in complete sentences (don't write out the questions):
1. What does the author mean by "We Never Stopped Crossing Borders"?
2. For what do you think the L.A. River a metaphor? What do you think it symbolizes?
3. The tone is the author's feelings and attitude towards his subject. What is the tone of this poem? Pick out at least 3 words or phrases that convey this tone.
4. What do you think the poet means by the phrase "invisible people" ?
3. Enrique's Journey Questions - Click on this link to take you to the questions about Enrique's Journey. Answer all of the questions in complete sentences. Just answer the questions for the chapters we have read so far. Don't write out the questions. (This can be done together---one answer sheet for both of you!)
